The Best (And Healthy) Food Substitutions

We all have foods that tempt us during a diet, and some that are just hard to avoid, given that they seem to be in everything. But with a few smart choices you can substitute the bad with the good, and jump start your healthy lifestyle.

For example, you may love baked potatoes, but the fat and calories, not to mention the carbs, are extreme, with up to 300 calories in just one small potato. Try a sweet potato instead, which will give you the same starchy treat, only better. You can even turn it into oven fries or baked sweet potato chips for a new spin on old favorites!

If you are craving something sweet there are plenty of options to keep you away from that pint of Ben & Jerry’s. Dark chocolate is rich, creamy, and very satisfying. It is also heart healthy, and contains less sugar and calories than milk chocolate.

Chocolate not your thing? Berries are a great snack, and have the right flavor to curb any sweet tooth. Raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries are especially good, as a handful will also boost energy and keep you from crashing in the middle of the day. It will also break a craving when you are tired, which is when you are most likely to binge.
