Gaming: Therapeutic Applications
Video game developers have long tapped into games as a source of educational benefits. Learning and playing are naturally related parts of human behavior, after all. But another application for video games–one which is relatively new–is more than educational. Therapeutic video games, aimed not at enhancing one’s knowledge of a certain subject, but at enhancing the very ability to learn, have become more available.
Many of these games use an innovative technology developed in NASA laboratories. This technology, which measures biofeedback, reads the brain activity of the game player and gives them the opportunity to excel at game objectives when they gain more control of, and adaptability in, their thought processes.
Research has indicated that strengthening the ability to focus and think clearly play a large role in treating the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and that strong focus and clear thinking can also help minimize the cognitive slippage and memory loss many people face as they age. Video games which utilize biofeedback readings have proven very effective in treating ADHD sufferers, as well as those who want to improve their ability to remember things and focus on a task at hand.
Further research is being conducted on possible applications for epileptics and those diagnosed with other seizure disorders, also.
