Cheap Sleep: Thrifty Travel
If you want or need to travel but can’t see how to accomplish your trip without going into debt, take a look at your plans for sleeping accommodations. Expenditures on hotels account for a large part of any trip’s total cost, and often these expenditures can be significantly reduced by doing some research or making different choices.
Many travelers choose hotels that are more expensive than their needs call for. On a trip primarily for conducting business, sight-seeing, or visiting friends you probably spend very little time at your hotel. While expensive hotels might offer more services, those services can often be equally convenient and less expensively obtained outside the hotel. Finding a cheap, clean hotel with minimal services conveniently located near an inexpensive café or restaurant will save you money twice over. You won’t be paying as much for the room, or as much for meals in a hotel dining room.
Some travelers book rooms in higher end hotels when they travel abroad out of a simple nervousness that less expensive local hotels will be of very low quality. But consider the budget hotels in your own region as a comparison. There are no-frills hotels that offer clean, safe, adequate rooms. The same is true worldwide. If you’re still worried after thoroughly researching a hotel, book your room but print out the information for several additional alternatives.
